Udhampur Encounter 2026: Two Terrorists Killed in Latest Anti-Militancy Operation

Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir: Two suspected terrorists were killed in an overnight counter-terrorism operation in the Majalta area of Udhampur district, according to the Indian Army and officials. The operation, code-named Operation Sohan, was launched after security forces received intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the Brattal area. The joint action involved the Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). 

The operation began during the intervening night of September 16 and 17, 2026, with security personnel moving into the forested area despite rain, difficult terrain and poor visibility. The Army’s Jammu-based White Knight Corps said the operation remained underway as search and surveillance continued after the encounter. 

How the Operation Began

According to the Army, confirmed intelligence inputs indicated the presence of terrorists in the general area of Brattal, Udhampur. Security forces then launched a targeted operation in the area.

Media reports citing officials said the joint search operation covered the Brattal Sohan and Khubban areas of Majalta, where suspicious movement had been detected. The operation developed into an armed encounter after security personnel came under fire. 

The location presented significant operational challenges. Heavy rain, dense forest, rugged terrain and low visibility made movement and surveillance more difficult. Despite those conditions, the security forces continued the search and cordon operation.

Two Terrorists Killed

The Army confirmed that two terrorists were neutralised during the operation. Officials quoted by several news organisations said the two were suspected of having links with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), although identification and other details were still being ascertained. 

The Army said arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. However, the identities of the two men had not been officially released in the initial updates.

Because the investigation and search operation were still continuing, officials had not released a complete account of the weapons recovered or any wider information about the suspected militant network involved.

Search Operation Continues

The conclusion of the firefight did not immediately mean the security operation was over.

The White Knight Corps said search and surveillance operations were continuing in the area to locate any remaining threat. Additional forces remained deployed as a precaution while teams searched the forested terrain. 

This stage is important in a counter-terrorism operation because security forces must establish that no additional armed personnel remain in the area and must secure evidence recovered from the site.

Reports also said surveillance equipment, including drones and other monitoring systems, was being used to assist the search in the difficult terrain.

Operation Sohan is the name given by the Army to the latest intelligence-based action in Udhampur.

The operation involved three major security components: the Indian Army’s White Knight Corps, Jammu & Kashmir Police and CRPF. Their coordination allowed intelligence, ground forces and local policing resources to be combined during the operation.

The Udhampur operation comes amid continuing counter-terrorism activity across Jammu & Kashmir.

In recent days, security agencies have also conducted investigations and searches linked to suspected militant networks in other parts of the Union Territory. The National Investigation Agency, for example, recently carried out searches at multiple locations in Jammu & Kashmir in a separate investigation involving an alleged cross-border terror conspiracy.

Separately, the Ministry of Home Affairs on September 16 declared the Shahzad Bhatti Network a terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, citing alleged involvement in arms, explosives and narcotics smuggling and the recruitment or radicalisation of young people. That action is separate from the Udhampur encounter.

The immediate focus in Udhampur remains the completion of the search and surveillance operation.

Investigators are expected to examine the encounter site, recover and document weapons or other material, and work to establish the identities and affiliations of the two deceased suspects. Officials may also investigate whether there were additional members of the suspected group in the surrounding area.
