Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin travelled together in the same car after a crucial bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. The unusual but increasingly familiar diplomatic gesture attracted attention as the two leaders headed to the opening ceremony of the sixth World Nomad Games.
The ride came after discussions between Modi and Putin on a wide range of issues, including India-Russia relations, trade, defence, energy, technology and the continuing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting took place at a time when India is managing relationships with Russia, the United States, China and other major powers amid growing global tensions.
A Symbol of Close India-Russia Relations
The decision by the two leaders to travel together immediately after their private meeting was widely seen as another sign of the close relationship between New Delhi and Moscow.
Images and video of Modi and Putin sharing a vehicle quickly attracted attention in India and abroad. The moment was also notable because it was not the first time that the two leaders had travelled together. They had previously shared a car during the SCO Summit in Tianjin in 2025.

During the Bishkek meeting, Modi again stressed the need to move away from a prolonged conflict and toward peace.

Ukraine War Remains a Major Issue
The Ukraine conflict continues to influence India’s diplomatic and economic relationship with Russia.
New Delhi has maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are essential to resolving the war. At the same time, India continues to purchase large quantities of Russian energy because of its economic and energy-security requirements.
Reuters reported this week that Russian crude accounted for about 51% of India’s crude imports in July 2026, although the share declined somewhat in August as Chinese purchases increased. The issue remains politically sensitive because Western countries continue to pressure nations buying Russian oil.
The Modi-Putin meeting therefore carried significance beyond the immediate bilateral relationship. It demonstrated India’s continued engagement with Russia while New Delhi also maintains ties with the West and other global powers.
World Nomad Games Added a Cultural Dimension
After the bilateral talks, Modi and Putin travelled together to attend the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Nomad Games at Bishkek Arena.
The event brought together athletes from more than 100 countries and celebrated traditional sports and cultural heritage from Central Asia and beyond. Events included horseback archery, wrestling, falconry and traditional games.
The leaders’ joint appearance at the ceremony added a cultural element to an otherwise highly political diplomatic visit.
The World Nomad Games also gave leaders attending the SCO gathering an opportunity for informal interactions outside official meetings.
SCO Summit Provides Wider Diplomatic Platform
The Modi-Putin meeting took place during the 26th SCO Summit, held in Bishkek from August 31 to September 1, 2026. Prime Minister Modi participated in the summit alongside leaders including Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The SCO has become an important platform for Eurasian countries to discuss regional security, economic cooperation and connectivity.
The gathering also came as relations among major powers remain complicated. Russia continues its war in Ukraine, while tensions in West Asia and competition between the United States and China are reshaping international diplomacy.
Against this background, meetings between India and Russia have particular importance.
India-Russia Relationship Enters a New Phase
India and Russia have maintained a close strategic partnership for decades. Defence cooperation remains one of the strongest pillars of the relationship, while energy, nuclear power, trade and technology are becoming increasingly important.
The two countries are also trying to expand bilateral trade and investment despite global sanctions and geopolitical pressure. More recent discussions have included manufacturing, fertilizers, railways, steel, critical minerals and civil nuclear cooperation.
For India, maintaining strong ties with Russia provides strategic flexibility. New Delhi can continue working with Moscow while also strengthening partnerships with the United States, Europe, Japan and other countries.

The shared-car moment may appear simple, but it became a major talking point because of the timing and context.
Coming immediately after a high-level bilateral meeting, the journey created a visual impression of friendship and comfort between the two leaders. It also repeated a diplomatic gesture that had already attracted attention during the previous SCO meeting in China.

The Modi-Putin meeting in Bishkek has once again highlighted the depth of India’s relationship with Russia. Their decision to travel together after the talks provided a memorable image, but the larger diplomatic message came from the issues discussed during the meeting.
As India continues its foreign-policy balancing act, cooperation with Russia is likely to remain an important part of New Delhi’s strategic calculations. The upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13 will provide another major opportunity for Modi and Putin to engage, alongside other world leaders.
