Thane, April 28, 2026 — What began as a routine early morning at a construction site in Mira Road quickly turned violent, leaving two security guards seriously injured and raising fresh concerns about radicalisation and isolated extremist acts.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has recovered a note referring to “lone wolf” attacks and the Islamic State from the residence of a 31-year-old man accused in the stabbing.

The accused, Zaib Zubair Ansari, was arrested within hours of the incident, which took place in the Mira Road area of Thane district. Investigators say the attack appears, at least initially, to have been carried out by a self-radicalised individual acting alone.

A Sudden Turn to Violence

According to officials, the incident unfolded early Monday morning when Ansari approached two security guards at an under-construction building, asking for directions to a nearby mosque. When the guards said they were unaware of its location, the interaction took an unsettling turn.

He reportedly asked them about their religion and whether they could recite the Kalma, an Islamic declaration of faith. When the guards could not, he walked away briefly, only to return moments later and launch a knife attack.

One of the victims, Subrato Sen, along with his supervisor Rajkumar Mishra, sustained serious injuries in the assault. Both are currently receiving medical treatment.

Swift Arrest, Troubling Discoveries

Police were able to identify Ansari using CCTV footage from the area. He was apprehended within 90 minutes by local law enforcement in the Mira Bhayander–Vasai Virar region.

Following the seriousness of the incident, the state government transferred the investigation to the ATS later that evening.

A search of Ansari’s residence in Naya Nagar uncovered a handwritten note referencing “lone wolf” attacks and the Islamic State, along with a laptop and religious texts. Officials are now examining whether he had consumed extremist content or had any links, direct or indirect, to radical networks.

A Complex Personal Background

Investigators revealed that Ansari had spent two decades in the United States before returning to India in 2020 after his work permit expired. He had lived in multiple locations, including Kurla and Vashi, before settling alone in Mira Road in 2022.

Authorities also noted that his personal life may have been strained. His wife, an Afghan national, reportedly left him and returned to the U.S., a detail now being examined as part of the broader inquiry into his mental and emotional state.

A Sensitive Local Context

The attack has added to unease in a region known for its diverse population. The Mira Bhayander–Vasai Virar belt has, in the past, witnessed communal tensions, including unrest during a religious procession in 2024.

Officials, however, have urged restraint, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and that conclusions about motive will depend on further evidence.

Investigation Continues

The ATS is currently analyzing digital devices recovered from the accused’s home and questioning him to determine the extent of his radicalisation and whether anyone else may have influenced or supported his actions.

For now, authorities are treating the case as an isolated but serious incident, one that underscores the evolving challenges of identifying and preventing lone-actor attacks in an increasingly digital world.
