Sharad Pawar, the longtime leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Monday after running into some health issues, but his party is assuring everyone there’s no need to panic. The doctors looking after him say he’s stable and they’re just keeping an eye on him to be safe.

From what party insiders are saying, Pawar went to the hospital for what started as routine medical concerns. The doctors decided it would be smart to keep him under observation for a bit, just to make sure nothing unexpected develops. Senior people in the NCP are emphasizing that this was really more about being careful than responding to any serious emergency.

Well-wishers stream in

Word of Pawar’s hospitalization spread quickly through political circles, and before long, a steady stream of political leaders and party workers started showing up at the hospital to check on him. Meanwhile, his phone and social media have apparently been lighting up with get-well messages from politicians of all stripes, showing the kind of respect the veteran leader commands even among his rivals. Party officials who’ve been briefing the press say Pawar is responding well to whatever treatment he’s getting and should be back to his usual schedule once the doctors give him the all-clear.

A political heavyweight takes a pause

For anyone who follows Indian politics, Sharad Pawar is practically a household name. The man has been a major player in both national politics and Maharashtra state politics for longer than many voters have been alive. He’s held some of the most important ministerial positions in the country and has this knack for being the person everyone turns to when coalition governments need to be stitched together or when political deadlocks need breaking. So when news broke that he was in the hospital, it understandably got people worried, even though his party keeps stressing that the doctors aren’t concerned.

The party says they’ll keep everyone posted as the doctors complete their evaluations over the next few days. For now, though, the message is clear: Pawar is doing okay, and this is just a precautionary pit stop rather than anything serious.
