A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Bihar’s Vaishali district as families carried the bodies of 13 children for cremation following a tragic boat accident in the Ganga River.
The Vaishali boat tragedy, which occurred on the evening of October 13, 2026, claimed the lives of 13 children, all below the age of 15.
The victims were travelling across the river to attend a feast when their boat overturned near Rampur Shyamchand village in the Raghopur area.
On October 14, grieving relatives gathered to bid farewell to the children. The tragedy left the village mourning and raised serious questions about the safety of river transport.
What Happened in the Vaishali Boat Tragedy?
According to district officials, the accident occurred at approximately 8:30 PM on Tuesday, October 13.
A boat carrying around 20 people was crossing the Ganga River near Rampur Shyamchand village when it capsized.
The passengers were reportedly travelling to a neighbouring village for a traditional feast.
Many of those on board were children.
After the boat overturned, passengers fell into the river, prompting local residents to begin rescue efforts.
Police, district officials and disaster-response teams later reached the location to search for missing passengers.

Bodies of 13 Children Taken for Cremation
On Wednesday, October 14, the bodies of the children were taken for cremation.
Families and neighbours gathered for the funeral processions as the village struggled to come to terms with the loss.
The victims included nine girls and four boys, according to Vaishali District Magistrate Varsha Singh.
All 13 children were younger than 15.
Reports described emotional scenes as relatives mourned children who had left home for a family gathering but never returned.
The loss was particularly devastating because several victims belonged to closely related families.
The funeral processions became a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary journey had turned into a tragedy.
How Many People Were Rescued?
Rescue teams continued searching the Ganga River on October 14 to establish whether anyone remained missing.
District Magistrate Varsha Singh confirmed that 13 bodies had been recovered.
She also reported that six people had been rescued and were receiving treatment at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in Patna.
The survivors included two adult men and four girls.
Their condition was reported to be stable.
Early news reports gave different figures for the number of people rescued or potentially missing, reflecting the difficulty of establishing an accurate passenger count.
Authorities continued checking these details during the rescue operation.
Survivors Describe the Boat Sinking
Some survivors reportedly said the boat began filling with water before it sank.
Two children who survived told local media that there was a hole in the boat and that they managed to escape by holding on to floating wood.
Their accounts have raised concerns about the condition of the vessel.
However, investigators must establish whether damage to the boat, overloading, river conditions or a combination of factors caused the accident.
A final official explanation of the cause should not be assumed from eyewitness accounts alone.

Was the Boat Operating Against Safety Rules?
The accident has raised serious questions about enforcement of river transport regulations.
District Magistrate Varsha Singh stated that both private and government boats had been prohibited from operating after sunset.
Despite the restriction, the boat involved in the tragedy was reportedly operating at night.
Officials also confirmed that the vessel was privately registered.
The district administration announced that action would be taken against the boat’s owner and operators.
The incident has highlighted the dangers of allowing passenger boats to operate without adequate safety checks and supervision.
District Administration Takes Action
Following the tragedy, the Vaishali district administration sought explanations from the Raghopur Circle Officer and Station House Officer.
The district magistrate also ordered their salaries to be withheld.
Officials said the action was connected to failures in monitoring the restrictions on night-time boat operations.
The administration has indicated that those responsible for violations may face further action.
The inquiry is expected to examine the condition of the boat, its operation after sunset and whether relevant safety rules were followed.
Government Announces Financial Assistance
The Bihar government announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the family of each deceased child.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and announced ₹2 lakh for each bereaved family from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
An additional ₹50,000 was announced for each injured person under the central relief assistance.
Local authorities also reported providing support under other applicable welfare and funeral assistance schemes.
While financial compensation can help families manage immediate expenses, it cannot replace the lives lost in the tragedy.
Why River Transport Safety Matters in Bihar
Many communities in Bihar depend on boats to cross rivers, especially in areas where bridges and reliable road connections are limited.
For residents living near the Ganga, boat travel may be part of everyday life.
However, unsafe vessels, overcrowding, poor visibility and inadequate safety equipment can make these journeys dangerous.
