Greater Noida: At least nine passengers were killed after a private sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Jewar late Wednesday night, September 23, 2026. Police said the bus was carrying around 30-35 passengers, and 20 people were rescued safely after the blaze erupted. Several passengers reportedly escaped through the windows as the fire spread rapidly through the vehicle.
The incident took place near the 33-kilometre milestone in the Dayanatpur area under Jewar police station jurisdiction. The bus, bearing Bihar registration plates, was travelling from Kashmere Gate in New Delhi towards Mahoba when the fire broke out at around 11 p.m.
Fire Spread Rapidly Inside the Bus
According to officials quoted by PTI, the fire spread quickly after it began while the bus was moving. Most passengers were reportedly asleep when the incident occurred, leaving them with little time to react.
Firefighters and police rushed to the spot after receiving an emergency call. Rescue teams worked through the night to evacuate passengers and bring the flames under control. When emergency personnel entered the smoke-filled bus, they found nine people dead. Preliminary information indicated that the victims died from burns or suffocation.

The New Indian Express, citing the fire officer, also reported the preliminary theory involving the air-conditioning system and engine lubricant.
At the same time, the FIR includes passengers’ accounts about a burning smell before the fire became severe. The two pieces of information are not necessarily contradictory, but both will need to be tested through the investigation.
Nine Victims Yet to Be Identified
Authorities said efforts were underway to establish the identities of the nine people who died.
The investigation includes forensic work at the site and examination of records connected to the passengers and the bus. Officials are expected to inform relatives once the identities are confirmed.
The identification process can take time in a major fire, especially when victims have suffered severe burns. Officials have not yet publicly released a complete list of the deceased in the reports reviewed for this article.
Prime Minister Announces Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of life and announced financial assistance for the affected families.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the next of kin of each deceased passenger will receive ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Injured passengers will receive ₹50,000 each.
The Prime Minister also expressed condolences to the families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed condolences and directed officials to ensure medical treatment for those affected by the incident.
Why Sleeper Bus Safety Is Under Focus
The tragedy has once again brought attention to the safety of sleeper buses operating on long-distance routes.
