Imran Khan moved from prison

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan was taken from prison to a hospital in Islamabad after the country’s Supreme Court ordered authorities to provide him with medical care.

Khan, 73, was moved from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital early on Friday for a medical examination. His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said that the transfer followed the court’s directive and that the former prime minister had arrived at the private hospital.

The development came after Khan’s lawyers raised concerns about his health and requested access to specialised treatment. The court had directed the government to move him from prison within two days.

Doctors later examined Khan and declared him fit to remain in custody. He was subsequently transferred back to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi early on Friday, according to Pakistan’s information minister and Indian media reports.

Supreme Court orders medical evaluation

A three-member bench of Pakistan’s Supreme Court issued the order earlier this week. The bench was headed by Justice Shahid Wahid and included Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim.

The court directed authorities to take Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a detailed medical evaluation. It also ordered that he should be examined by a medical panel that includes his personal physician.

Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, was also expected to be associated with the medical process. The court further allowed Khan to meet family members once a week and speak to his sons by telephone twice a week.

The ruling followed a legal petition filed on behalf of the jailed politician. His lawyers argued that his medical needs could not be properly addressed inside the prison and that he required an independent examination.

The government had sought a review of the court’s decision. However, the review request was reportedly rejected, allowing the transfer to proceed.

Dispute over hospital transfer

Although Khan was taken to a hospital, disagreement quickly emerged over how the court order was implemented.

The Supreme Court had specified Shifa International Hospital as the facility for Khan’s examination. However, Pakistan’s information minister said that Khan was examined at the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences because of security concerns along the planned route.

The government said that the security situation had been affected by the presence of PTI workers. Khan’s party rejected that explanation and alleged that the authorities had violated the Supreme Court’s instructions.

The dispute has added to tensions between the government and PTI. The party has repeatedly demanded better treatment for Khan and greater access for his family and doctors.

Supporters of the former prime minister have also called for transparency in his medical care. They want the medical panel’s findings to be made public and have questioned why the hospital stay was brief.

Doctors clear Khan to return

Khan was taken to the hospital around midnight for a medical check-up. After the examination, doctors reportedly found no condition that required immediate hospital treatment.

He was declared medically fit to remain in custody and was sent back to Adiala Jail at about 5 a.m. local time. The assessment was conducted after the Supreme Court ordered authorities to ensure that Khan received specialised medical attention.

The length of Khan’s hospital stay had not been fixed by the court. The order focused on a medical assessment and access to an appropriate treatment process rather than on granting him release from prison.

His return to jail means that he remains in custody while legal cases against him continue. Khan has denied wrongdoing in the cases and has described the proceedings as politically motivated.

Political impact in Pakistan

Imran Khan remains one of Pakistan’s most influential political figures despite being in prison. His PTI party says that he has been targeted because of his political opposition to the government and the country’s powerful establishment.

The government denies those allegations and maintains that Khan’s legal cases are being handled through the judicial system. He has been convicted in corruption-related cases, while several other legal proceedings remain active.

The latest hospital episode is likely to intensify the political dispute. PTI leaders may use the development to renew demands for improved prison conditions and regular medical access.

The government, meanwhile, is expected to emphasise that Khan was examined by doctors and returned to prison only after being declared fit. The authorities have also cited security concerns as a reason for changing aspects of the transfer process.

What happens next

The medical panel ordered by the Supreme Court is expected to play an important role in the next stage of the case. Khan’s personal doctor and sister are expected to remain involved in the assessment, subject to the court’s directions.

The court’s instructions on weekly family meetings and telephone contact with his sons may also be monitored closely. Any failure to follow those directions could lead to another legal challenge from Khan’s lawyers.

For now, Imran Khan remains imprisoned at Adiala Jail. His brief hospital visit has brought renewed attention to his health, his legal battles and the continuing political conflict between his supporters and Pakistan’s government.
