Jamui, Bihar: The investigation into the Jamui harassment case took a major turn on Tuesday after police reported that the primary suspect, Nandan Yadav, was injured in a police encounter while officers were trying to arrest him. Yadav reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was taken into custody before being admitted to Jamui Sadar Hospital for treatment. Another accused, Hareram Yadav, was also reportedly injured while allegedly trying to flee during the police operation.
The case came to wider public attention after a video involving a Class 10 girl and her male friend circulated on social media. Police say the incident took place on September 19 near the Madwa Pahad area of Jamui. The footage prompted an investigation, the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and the arrest of several suspects.
What Happened in Jamui?
According to police and media reports, the two teenagers had gone to the hilly outskirts of Jamui after coaching classes. They were travelling on a two-wheeler and had reportedly gone to the area to take photographs.
A group of people allegedly stopped the teenagers and subjected them to harassment and assault. Part of the incident was recorded on video, and the footage later appeared on social media, causing widespread concern and prompting police action.
Authorities have stressed that the minors’ identities must be protected. Bihar Police has also taken action against social-media accounts accused of circulating material that could identify the girl. India Today reported that an FIR was registered against around 120 social-media profiles over the circulation of the video and the exposure of the minor’s identity.
Police Launch Investigation
After the video came to light, Jamui Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A special investigation team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali was formed to trace the remaining suspects.
Police said around seven people had been identified from the available video footage and other evidence. Initial reports said three suspects had been arrested before Tuesday’s operation. Following the reported encounter, the number of arrests increased, according to the New Indian Express.
Investigators are examining the video, vehicle details and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify each person allegedly involved.
Main Suspect Injured During Arrest Operation
The latest development occurred during a police operation to apprehend Yadav.
According to reports, Yadav was shot in the leg during what police described as an encounter. He was subsequently arrested and taken to hospital for treatment. Reports also said another suspect, Hareram Yadav, was injured while allegedly attempting to escape.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the sequence of events immediately before the firearm was used, remain subject to investigation. The issue highlights the legal and ethical risks of forwarding sensitive material involving children. Even when a video is already widely available online, re-sharing it can expose victims to further harm and may lead to legal consequences.
Police are therefore investigating not only the alleged original offence but also the subsequent online circulation of the footage.
Women and Child Safety Under Focus
The Jamui case has brought renewed attention to the safety of young people in isolated areas and the importance of rapid police response when incidents involving minors are reported.
The National and Bihar women’s commissions have taken note of the case and sought information from the local administration. The Bihar State Women’s Commission has said it will meet the victim and gather information about the incident.
Police have said that the investigation will continue until all identified suspects are located and the evidence is fully examined.
What Happens Next?
The SIT is expected to continue questioning suspects, examining digital evidence and reviewing the viral footage. Investigators will also need to establish the individual roles of those allegedly involved and determine whether additional people participated in the incident.
The police investigation is separate from the judicial process. Any accused person remains entitled to legal proceedings, and guilt must ultimately be established through the courts.
For the victims, authorities face the additional responsibility of protecting their privacy and ensuring that sensitive material does not continue circulating online.
