Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has started an official visit to Canada and the United States to strengthen economic partnerships, attract investment and discuss global financial priorities.

The visit will continue from August 25 to September 2. Sitharaman will travel to Toronto, Chicago, Asheville and New York during the eight-day tour.

Her itinerary includes meetings with finance ministers, central bank officials, investors, business leaders and technology experts. She will also lead India’s delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina.

The tour comes at a time when global economies face pressure from geopolitical conflicts, trade uncertainty, energy risks and changing investment patterns. India is seeking stronger partnerships with major economies and greater participation in global supply chains.

First India-Canada economic dialogue

Sitharaman will begin her visit in Canada. In Toronto, she will participate in the first India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue with Canada’s Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

The dialogue will focus on macroeconomic developments, financial-sector cooperation, bilateral investment and shared international priorities. Both sides are expected to discuss ways to improve economic engagement after years of political tension.

The meeting could also support cooperation in energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals. These sectors are becoming increasingly important as countries seek reliable supplies of resources needed for batteries, electric vehicles, renewable energy and advanced technology.

Sitharaman will meet Canadian investors and industrial leaders during her visit. She will explain India’s growth opportunities and encourage Canadian companies to expand their operations in India.

India wants to attract investment in manufacturing, infrastructure, digital services and clean energy. Canadian companies may also be interested in India’s growing consumer market and expanding technology sector.

Investment meetings in Toronto

The finance minister is expected to hold one-on-one meetings with chief executive officers and senior representatives of Canadian companies. These discussions will cover India’s economic outlook, business reforms and investment opportunities.

The government wants to present India as a stable and competitive destination for global capital. It is also seeking investment in sectors that can create jobs and strengthen domestic production.

Sitharaman will interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Toronto. The community plays an important role in business, education, technology and professional services between India and Canada.

Diaspora engagement could help promote trade and investment links. Indian-origin entrepreneurs and professionals may also provide information about business opportunities in both countries.

US visit includes three cities

Sitharaman’s US programme will begin on August 28. She will visit Chicago, Asheville and New York for discussions with investors, business executives and G20 representatives.

In Chicago, she will participate in a roundtable with investors and private-sector leaders. The meeting will focus on India’s investment opportunities, economic prospects and ways to expand business cooperation between India and the United States.

The finance minister will also visit the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago. She is expected to discuss entrepreneurship, technology commercialisation and connections between India’s startup ecosystem and American innovation institutions.

India has one of the world’s largest startup communities. Cooperation with US universities, investors and technology companies could help Indian firms access capital, research partnerships and international markets.

India to lead G20 finance meeting

In Asheville, Sitharaman will lead the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. The meeting will take place on August 31 and September 1 under the US presidency of the G20.

Finance ministers, central bank governors and senior officials from G20 countries will discuss global economic and financial challenges. The agenda is expected to include growth, inflation, debt, trade, energy security and financial stability.

Geopolitical conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine have added uncertainty to the global economy. Disruptions to energy supplies and shipping routes could affect inflation and growth in many countries.

India is expected to highlight the needs of developing economies. The country may call for greater access to development finance, stable supply chains and reforms in international financial institutions.

Sitharaman will also have an opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from other G20 economies. These discussions could support India’s economic diplomacy and help build cooperation on shared priorities.

New York investor meetings

The final part of the US visit will take place in New York. Sitharaman will attend an investor roundtable with chief executives and senior representatives of major companies.

She will discuss India’s economic and financial landscape, investment opportunities and the country’s future growth prospects. Financial-sector executives are also expected to examine India’s capital markets and banking system.

Sitharaman will participate in a bell-ringing ceremony hosted by Nasdaq. The event will provide an opportunity to engage with companies involved in technology-driven financial markets.

The Nasdaq programme may also highlight India’s growing links with the global technology and investment community. Indian companies listed on international exchanges and US investors in India could benefit from stronger engagement.

Focus on global economic cooperation

Sitharaman’s visit reflects India’s effort to expand economic relationships beyond traditional trade and investment channels. The government is seeking cooperation in new areas such as artificial intelligence, critical minerals, renewable energy and digital finance.

Canada and the United States are important partners for India in these sectors. Both countries have large pools of capital, advanced research institutions and companies with international operations.

The visit may also help India communicate its policy priorities directly to investors. Clearer discussions on taxation, regulation, infrastructure and market access can support long-term investment decisions.

However, major global risks remain. Higher energy prices, trade restrictions and geopolitical tensions could affect investment flows and economic growth.

What to expect

No single visit can resolve all economic challenges, but Sitharaman’s meetings could create new opportunities for India. The government will try to secure investment commitments, strengthen financial cooperation and improve coordination with Canada and the United States.

The G20 meeting will give India a platform to discuss global concerns with finance ministers and central bank governors. Bilateral meetings will focus on practical partnerships and business opportunities.

Sitharaman’s Canada-US visit is therefore important for both diplomacy and economic policy. It combines investor outreach with high-level discussions on global financial stability.

As India seeks faster growth and deeper integration with international markets, the finance minister’s tour is expected to support the country’s investment and trade agenda.
