The head of Toronto’s homicide unit is leading a desperate search for a 32-year-old man wanted in connection with the death of a young Indian woman, whose body was discovered in a downtown residence over the weekend in what investigators believe was a preventable tragedy.
Toronto Police have issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Abdul Ghafoori, charging him with first-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old Himanshi Khurana. The victim, who had made Toronto her home, was found dead inside a residence on Saturday morning (December 20) after friends reported her missing. Investigators have classified this as the city’s 40th homicide of 2025 and confirmed it appears to be yet another heartbreaking case of intimate partner violence.
The investigation began late Friday evening (December 19) when concerned friend’s contacted police about a missing person in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area. Through the night, officers combed the neighborhood searching for any sign of Himanshi. At approximately 6:30 AM on Saturday, they made the discovery everyone feared her body was found inside a home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
By Monday, detectives had identified Abdul Ghafoori as their prime suspect. Authorities confirmed that Ghafoori and Himanshi were “known to each other” and had been in an intimate relationship. The first-degree murder charge indicates investigators believe her death was premeditated a deliberate act that carries a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The victims identified include:
- Himanshi Khurana: A 30-year-old Indian national living in Toronto, whose life was tragically cut short.
- Her Family in India: Now grieving an unimaginable loss thousands of miles away.
- The Indian Community: Shaken by yet another case of violence against women.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed “deep shock and sadness” over the murder of the young woman. In a statement released on Wednesday (December 24), consular officials confirmed they are working closely with Toronto Police and providing “all possible assistance” to Ms. Khurana’s devastated family during this impossible time.
“This tragic and painful incident is a great loss for the family and our community,” a consular spokesperson said, echoing the grief felt by many who knew Himanshi or have been touched by similar tragedies.
“We are appealing to the public if anybody would happen to know where this man is, please call the police immediately,” a Toronto Police spokesperson urged during a press conference. The urgency in their voice was clear: Ghafoori remains at large somewhere in Canada, and investigators are racing against time to locate him.
The case has sparked renewed concern over violence against women and the vulnerability of international residents in Canada. Local community organizations have called for increased funding and resources for victims of domestic abuse, pointing out that Khurana’s death marks a grim milestone for Toronto’s homicide unit this year. While police have released a photograph of the suspect to aid in the search, they have not yet disclosed the specific cause of death or the sequence of events that led to this tragedy information that may be crucial to the ongoing investigation.
A Canada-wide warrant means Ghafoori is now wanted by every police agency from coast to coast. Officers in Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and dozens of other cities have his photo and are on alert. Authorities have issued a stern warning to the public: do not approach the suspect if spotted. Instead, contact 911 immediately or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
The investigation by the Toronto Police Homicide and Missing Persons Unit continues around the clock as detectives work to trace Ghafoori’s movements since Saturday morning. They’re reviewing security footage, interviewing witnesses, and following up on tips from the public. Every lead matters, and investigators believe someone out there knows where he is.
Behind the police jargon and legal terminology lies a human tragedy that has left a family shattered and a community demanding answers and action to prevent the next headline like this one.
