‘ONLY American-Made’: Trump orders Venezuela to spend oil proceeds on U.S. goods

In a massive strategic pivot, President Donald Trump has announced that Venezuela will exclusively purchase American-made products with the revenue from its newly brokered oil deal, effectively turning the United States into Caracas’s primary economic partner.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday (January 7, 2026) declared that the multi-billion dollar proceeds from Venezuela’s massive oil transfer to the U.S. must be spent solely on American products. Posting on Truth Social, Trump revealed the interim government under Delcy Rodríguez has committed to a “Buy American” mandate for all funds generated by the sale of 30 to 50 million barrels of crude, a move the President described as a “wise choice” for both nations.

Under the new arrangement, the U.S. effectively controls the financial taps of the Venezuelan economy. The oil currently held in storage due to previous U.S. embargoes will be shipped directly to Gulf Coast refineries and sold at market prices. But the cash won’t be sent directly to Caracas.

  • Controlled Accounts: Proceeds will be held in U.S.-controlled bank accounts. Funds will only be released to pay for approved American exports.
  • Priority Sectors: Trump specified the money will be used to purchase American agricultural products, medicines, medical devices, and specialized equipment to repair Venezuela’s crumbling electric grid and energy facilities.
  • Strategic Realignment: The deal serves to decouple Venezuela from its traditional trade allies Russia, China, and Iran, who previously exchanged oil for military hardware and high-interest loans.

The announcement follows Tuesday’s confirmation that the interim authorities would “turn over” up to 50 million barrels of “high-quality, sanctioned oil.” With oil currently trading at roughly $56 a barrel, the first tranche of this deal is valued at approximately $2.8 billion.

“This money will be controlled by me, as President… to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States,” Trump said. He’s directed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute the transport of the crude via storage ships to U.S. unloading docks immediately.

The “Only American-made” mandate is expected to give a significant boost to U.S. manufacturing and farming sectors.

  • Agri-Boost: U.S. grain and food exporters are poised to address Venezuela’s chronic domestic food shortages.
  • Energy Tech: Companies specializing in power infrastructure will lead the effort to modernize the Venezuelan grid, which has suffered from decades of neglect.
  • Friday Summit: The White House has summoned CEOs from ExxonMobil, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips for a meeting this Friday to finalize the private sector’s role in “re-pumping” Venezuela’s oil fields.

“Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States of America as their principal partner – A wise choice, and a very good thing for the people of Venezuela, and the United States.” President Donald Trump.

While the deal offers an immediate economic lifeline to the post-Maduro administration, it cements a model of “conditional access” where Caracas can only touch its wealth by fueling U.S. industry. As “Operation Southern Spear” continues to intercept any rogue tankers trying to bypass the blockade, the message from Washington is clear: Venezuela’s recovery will be built with American tools, or not at all.
