In a significant development in India’s counter-espionage efforts, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a businessman from Moradabad, identified as Shahzad Wahab, on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Authorities allege that Wahab, operating under the guise of a garment trader, recruited over 20 individuals, including three women, to gather sensitive information and facilitate cross-border smuggling activities.
Espionage Under the Cover of Trade
Wahab, a resident of Rampur, reportedly used his clothing business as a front to establish connections with ISI operatives. He is accused of smuggling goods such as cosmetics, clothes, and spices across the India-Pakistan border, while simultaneously transmitting confidential information related to India’s internal security to his handlers in Pakistan.
Recruitment and Radicalization
Investigations reveal that Wahab targeted individuals from humble backgrounds across districts like Sambhal, Moradabad, and Rampur. He allegedly exploited religious sentiments to radicalize and recruit them into espionage activities. These recruits were provided with funds and Indian SIM cards to maintain communication with ISI agents. Some were even facilitated with travel documents to visit Pakistan for training and assignments.
Judicial Custody and Ongoing Investigations
Following his arrest, Wahab has been placed under 14-day judicial custody. The ATS is intensifying efforts to trace and apprehend the network of individuals he recruited, many of whom have reportedly gone into hiding upon learning of his detention. Authorities are also scrutinizing his financial transactions and communication records to uncover the full extent of the espionage network.
Broader Crackdown on Espionage Networks
Wahab’s arrest is part of a larger nationwide crackdown on espionage activities linked to Pakistan. Recently, several individuals from diverse backgrounds, including a YouTuber and a student, have been apprehended for alleged involvement in spying and aiding enemy operations. These developments underscore the persistent threat posed by foreign intelligence agencies and the need for heightened vigilance.
