The South Korean tech giant has officially entered the “tri-fold” era, launching a double-hinged smartphone that unfurls into a full-sized tablet, aiming to reclaim its dominance in the foldable market.

Samsung Electronics has officially unveiled the Galaxy Z TriFold, its first-ever triple-folding smartphone, marking a major shift in its mobile strategy. Announced today (December 2) in Seoul, the device features a unique dual-hinge design that transforms a standard phone into a massive 10-inch tablet, directly challenging Chinese rivals in the ultra-premium sector.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is an engineering heavyweight packed into a slim frame. When fully unfolded, it measures just 3.9mm thick. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset and features a robust 5,600mAh battery split across three cells to maintain balance.

The device sports a 6.5-inch cover screen that functions like a regular phone. When opened, it reveals a 10-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. To achieve this, Samsung developed a new “Armor FlexHinge” system—two hinges of different sizes that fold inwards, protecting the main screen from scratches while minimizing the gap.

On the camera front, it borrows heavily from the Galaxy S25 Ultra, boasting a 200MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

“The Galaxy Z TriFold solves one of the industry’s biggest challenges: combining true portability with high-performance productivity,” said TM Roh, Head of Mobile Experience at Samsung.

Tech analysts view this as a necessary move. “Samsung invented the foldable category but lost the ‘wow factor’ to Huawei’s Mate XT earlier this year. This is their answer—a device that proves they can still lead hardware innovation,” noted a market observer from Business World.

The launch comes at a critical time for Samsung. While it pioneered foldables with the Z Fold and Flip series, its market share has eroded due to aggressive competition from Huawei, Honor, and Google. Huawei’s Mate XT, launched months earlier, was the world’s first tri-fold phone, putting pressure on Samsung to respond.

Unlike its competitors, Samsung is marketing the Z TriFold as a productivity workhorse. It is the first phone to support standalone Samsung DeX, meaning users can run a desktop-like interface directly on the 10-inch screen without needing an external monitor.

The Galaxy Z TriFold will go on sale in South Korea on December 12 with a price tag of roughly 3.59 million won (approx. $2,500 / £1,980). Samsung has confirmed a wider rollout to China, Singapore, and the UAE later this month, while US and European customers will likely have to wait until Q1 2026. Details on an Indian launch remain unconfirmed.
