Former US President Donald Trump has warned that if the ongoing nuclear talks with Iran do not result in a meaningful agreement, there could be negative consequences for both Tehran and the region.
Speaking to reporters in Washington on Wednesday, Trump said that diplomacy must lead to concrete results, or the current impasse could escalate. “We have to make a meaningful deal,” he said, adding that without one, the situation could deteriorate quickly.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Trump’s comments come as efforts continue to revive negotiations aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear programme. Both sides have held several rounds of talks, but key differences remain over inspections, uranium enrichment, and sanctions relief.
Trump said that half-measures would not be enough. “Either we get a good deal, or things happen that nobody wants,” he said.
Trump’s Position on Iran
Iranian officials say their nuclear activities are peaceful and within their rights, and have resisted calls for stricter restrictions. Trump described the talks as a test of Iran’s willingness to compromise.
“Now they need to show they want peace,” he said. “We are ready to sit down, but Iran has to understand that we cannot accept a bad agreement.”
Regional Context
Trump’s remarks reflect wider international concerns about the nuclear negotiations. The Middle East remains an area of strategic competition, with global powers monitoring the situation for signs of escalation.
“Diplomacy is the best path,” said a senior foreign policy analyst. “But when rhetoric becomes more pointed, it signals that patience is wearing thin.”
Negotiated Solution Preferred
Trump also repeated that the United States prefers a negotiated solution. He said a successful deal would improve stability, reduce military risks, and allow for cooperation on other regional issues.
“We want peace,” he said. “But peace has to be real, lasting, and verifiable.”
Next Steps
Negotiators are expected to continue talks in Europe and the Middle East to build on earlier progress. It is unclear if Trump’s warning will change Iran’s position, but his comments may add pressure on both sides to reach an agreement.
World leaders continue to call for calm and are urging diplomatic progress to avoid further escalation over the nuclear issue.
