A young National Guard member has died after being shot near the White House. A second soldier is still in critical condition.

Who Was Killed

The fallen soldier has been identified as 20 year old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. She was serving with the West Virginia National Guard and had volunteered to work in Washington during the holiday period. She was shot in the head and chest and later died in the hospital.

Second Soldier Still Critical

A second soldier, Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition. Doctors are monitoring severe internal and neurological injuries. His condition is described as hour by hour.

What Happened

The shooting took place near 17th and I Streets in Washington DC, only a few blocks from the White House. The soldiers were on routine foot patrol when a gunman approached and opened fire at close range.

Law enforcement responded immediately and the suspect was shot and arrested at the scene.

Suspect in Custody

The suspect is a 29 year old Afghan born man who entered the country in 2021. He now faces federal murder and terrorism related charges. Investigators are reviewing his travel, online activity and communication history.

National Reaction

United States President Donald Trump confirmed Beckstrom’s death during a Thanksgiving call with military personnel. He described her as a brave and dedicated soldier who chose to serve far from home during a national holiday.

Tributes have also come from military leaders, state officials and veterans groups across the country.

Security and Policy Implications

The shooting has raised major questions about security in the capital and the wider use of National Guard personnel for city patrol missions. The incident is also fueling renewed debate about immigration vetting and domestic counterterror procedures.

Why This Matters

This attack is one of the closest armed assaults on security personnel near the White House in recent years. It comes during a period of heightened national security concern and rising political tension. For now, the nation waits to see whether the second wounded soldier will survive and what investigators uncover about the motive behind the attack.
