In a significant development for Mumbai’s suburban transit, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated trial runs on Metro Line 9, connecting Kashigaon to Dahisar East. This 11.4 km elevated corridor, an extension of the existing Metro Line 7, aims to enhance connectivity for the rapidly growing Mira-Bhayandar region.
Key Features of Metro Line 9
Route and Stations: The corridor encompasses stations at Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon, with plans to extend further into Mira-Bhayandar. Integration with Existing Lines: Line 9 will seamlessly integrate with Metro Lines 2A, 7, and the upcoming 7A, facilitating direct access to key areas like Andheri, Ghatkopar, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Double-Decker Structure: Notably, this corridor features a unique double-decker design, combining a metro line and a vehicular flyover, a first in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Anticipated Benefits
Reduced Congestion: The new line is expected to alleviate traffic on the Western Express Highway and reduce the burden on Western Railway’s suburban trains. Enhanced Connectivity: Residents of Mira-Bhayandar will gain improved access to Mumbai’s commercial hubs, significantly cutting down travel time. Environmental Impact: The metro’s introduction is projected to decrease vehicular emissions, contributing to a cleaner urban environment.
Progress and Future Plans
With 96% of civil work and 75% of system integration completed, the MMRDA targets commissioning the initial 4.4 km stretch between Dahisar and Kashigaon by the end of the year. Dynamic testing, including load evaluations and emergency drills, is currently underway.
The state government has ambitious plans to expand the metro network, aiming to add 50 km of new routes in 2025, 62 km in 2026, and 60 km in 2027.
